The American Yod Special Purpose

America is a land of great destiny and has the Yod written all over it.  We are the second oldest surviving democracy in history (Iceland is the oldest), and we are arguably the most successful.  Many of us believe that we are in an exceptional place in history with a special mission to fulfill.  Part of this special mission is setting a good example, which encompasses the idea of American Exceptionalism.  The above quote from the Declaration of Independence expresses American ideals and our sense of justice.  No other nation on Earth has guaranteed that its citizens have a right to the pursuit of happiness.  Even though we are far from perfect, we seem to be destined to set an example.  With our thrilling, bloody and controversial history, it should surprise no one that American history is full of Yods, beginning with the publication of Thomas Paine's Common Sense on January 10, 1776 in Philadelphia.  When Paine said in the introduction, "The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind," he was expressing our Yod Bearer mission to find and fulfill the Special Purpose of being “The City on the Hill” for the rest of the world.  Paine clarified this mission statement further on page 51 when he said, "...we have every opportunity and every encouragement before us, to form the noblest purest constitution on the face of the Earth."  These two statements are a clear expression of the American Yod Special Purpose.

To briefly explain, the Yod is an Isosceles triangle formed by an apex, or "Foot/Fulcrum," planet that is inconjunct, or quincunx, two "Base/Leg" planets that are sextile each other.  This sounds complicated, and it is.  It is no wonder that it is often referred to as, "The Finger of Fate," and sometimes, "The Eye of God," because the Yod is an aspect of uncertainty, even chaos, and puts tremendous pressure on the Yod Bearer to find and fulfill an often-nebulous Special Purpose.  Having a Yod can be a difficult and painful experience.  The Yod is a clarion call, a warning, and our history is full of them, underscoring the misunderstood concept of American Exceptionalism:  We are exceptional not because we are “better” than any other nation on Earth, but because we have an obligation to BE better by setting a good example and doing the right thing due to our privilege of being in the right place and the right time in history.  We have not always succeeded in this endeavor, but it is our God-given duty to try to always act righteously and with justice for all.   America is a land of great destiny and has the Yod written all over it.  This quotation is from “The Paris Treaty Chart:  An Alternative American Horoscope,” which was published in the October, 2013 issue of Dell Horoscope magazine.  Since the publication of this article, I conducted a study of nearly 100 key events in American history and found that our history is full of Yods.  In fact, with a few overlapping events, there are five Yod periods of five Yods each from 1776 to 2015, as follows:

Yod Clusters of Five:  The First Yod Period:  The American Revolution

First Yod:  1/10/1776 - Publication of "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine

Second Yod:  7/4/1776 - Adoption of the Declaration of Independence

Third Yod:  9/3/1783 - Execution of the Paris Treaty Chart in Paris

Fourth Yod:  1/14/1784 - Ratification of the Paris Treaty Chart on U.S. territory

Fifth Yod:  4/9/1784 - Acceptance of the Paris Treaty Chart by King George III

Not only is American history full of Yods, they form a pattern, specifically five clusters of five from the period of January, 1776 to the removal of the Confederate flag from State Property in Columbia, South Carolina on July 9, 2015.  Each Cluster is separated by a Yod transition event.  The first is the Louisiana Purchase in 1803; the second is the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869; the third is the Woodstock Music Festival in August, 1969; and the fourth is Hurricane Andrew in 1992.  The first five Yods occur from 1776 to 1784 and encompass:

(1)  the publication on January 10, 1776 of Common Sense, Thomas Paine's pamphlet against monarchy:  Virgo Moon Yod to Aquarius Mars and Aries Chiron - revolt (Aquarius Mars) from service to the Mother Country (Virgo Moon) after years of militant abuse (Aries Chiron);

(2)  the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776:  Aquarius Moon Yod to Virgo Neptune and Cancer Mercury - we chose to revolt from the Mother Country (Aquarius Moon) by means of an inspired declaration (Virgo Neptune/Cancer Mercury) that would serve as the basis for a new nation;

(3)  the execution of the Paris Treaty on September 3, 1783 in Paris, France by John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay and David Hartley:  Aquarius Pluto Yod to Virgo Sun and Cancer Uranus - world transformation (Aquarius Pluto) through service (Virgo Sun) to ideals of equality and brotherhood in the new nation (Cancer Uranus);

(4)  the ratification of the Paris Treaty on January 14, 1784 in Annapolis, Maryland:  Cancer Uranus Yod to Aquarius Jupiter/Pluto/Mercury and Sagittarius Venus - establishment of a new nation (Cancer Uranus) based on love of liberty and justice for all (Sagittarius Venus) will be an inspiration to humanity (Aquarius Mercury/Jupiter/Pluto); and

(5)  King George's acknowledgement of the Paris Treaty on April 9, 1784 in London, England:  Cancer Uranus Yod to Aquarius Pluto and Sagittarius Moon - the Mother (Moon) has to let the rebellious child go free (Cancer Uranus) and establish a home of its own, which sets the stage for world transformation (Aquarius Pluto).

All three Paris Treaty Chart Yods have two planets in common, Uranus in Cancer and Pluto in Aquarius.  Pluto is a Yod Foot in the first Paris Treaty Chart and a Yod Leg in the other two.  Because Pluto was not discovered until 1930, two of the three Paris Treaty Chart Yods were hidden from the world during the birth and early history of our nation.  This resonates with Pluto's rule of secrets and the invisible world.  Pluto also represents transformation and regeneration.  America has transformed the world, not only through our scientific achievements, but also by our culture and example of a successful representational government.  Pluto rules death - the American Revolution meant the death of monarchy and the many soldiers who would perish in the War.  The planet of war, Mars, is said to be the co-ruler of Pluto, and there is considerable merit to this argument.  The Martial aspect of Pluto is evident in the many wars in our brief history - the American revolution, the French/Indian War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Viet Nam War, the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan.

Pluto rules atomic energy.  In 1942, shortly after the discovery of Pluto, the United States government began building the first atomic bomb.  This weapon of terror (Pluto rules terrorism and other forms of subversive activity) has the potential to further transform the world by either eliminating war or ending life on Earth.  As was discussed in the October, 2013 issue of Dell Horoscope magazine, the concept of M.A.D. (Mutually Assured Destruction) is a powerful incentive for the human race to learn to settle our differences without resorting to war, for even a limited nuclear war will poison the world for generations to come.

Pluto is in Aquarius, the sign of brotherhood and humanity.  Though we are war-like, and have made many mistakes, we are also the water bearer of hope for humanity.  The Virgo Sun Yod in the first Paris Treaty Chart Yod symbolizes our service to humanity through our inventions, our military interventions in the two World Wars, our culture and our example of how much a free people can achieve.  Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the other planet that occurs in all three Paris Treaty Charts.

Uranus is the planet of revolution and is a Yod Foot in both 1784 Paris Treaty Charts ("PTC"); and a Yod Leg in the 1783 PTC.  Among other things, the American Revolution, symbolized by the two Uranus Yods, would spread to other countries, demoralizing and demolishing detested monarchies along the way.  Uranus rules genius.  America is famous for its "know-how," and has contributed many marvelous inventions to the human race, among them the automobile, the hydroelectric power plant and the personal computer from such geniuses as Henry Ford, Nikola Tesla and Steven Wozniak.  Uranus works well in cardinal water sign, Cancer, because Uranus loves the cardinal sign's need to go, go, go and water conducts electricity, which is ruled by Uranus.

Uranus is the planet of astrology.  America has produced many excellent astrologers in its brief history, starting with Benjamin Franklin, who also produced one of America's first ephemerides, Poor Richard's Almanac.  Many American astrologers are original thinkers, like Carl Payne Tobey, Marc Edmond Jones, Dane Rudhyar, Isabel Hickey, Marcia Moore, and Richard Nolle, for example.

Uranus in Cancer represents the emerging nation.  Cancer is the sign of the home and mother - we rebelled against our mother country, England, and made a home for ourselves in the new world.  Cancer and the fourth house also rule beginning-of-life and end-of-life issues.  We had a challenging birth after a seven-year war against the most powerful country on Earth.  The mother came back to punish the child in the War of 1812.  With respect to the end-of-life issue, it may come about that the U.S.A. could self-destruct, as President Lincoln suggested:

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger?  By what means shall we fortify against it?  Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the Ocean, and crush us at a blow?  Never!  All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined with all the treasure of the earth . . . could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years . . . If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher.  As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.

Abraham Lincoln, 1818, from The Civil War by Ken Burns, introduction

Uranus rules brotherhood.  We are a nation of immigrants, but sometimes seem to forget this.  It is through the ideal and practice of brotherhood that we will ultimately triumph and ensure our national longevity.  Part of our Yod Bearer purpose is to set a good example by treating all people like brothers and sisters.  Our country became great through its geniuses and through waves of hopeful immigrants, like the waves in the glyph for Aquarius.  We are the water bearer of hope for humanity.

The three Paris Treaty Chart Yods were previously discussed in detail in the October, 2013 issue of Dell Horoscope magazine in, "The Paris Treaty Chart:  An Alternative American Horoscope."  America's horoscope is likely a tripod of the three Paris Treaty horoscopes, all of which involve Uranus in Cancer.  Most of our Founding Fathers were Freemasons, therefore, a Masonic triumvirate of three horoscopes makes perfect sense, not only because of its beautiful symmetry and architecture, but also because it protected the infant nation by thwarting any attempts to use a single horoscope against us.  Our first ten years were critical ones in which we rebelled against King George III and the mighty British Empire; fought a chaotic and precarious seven-year war to free ourselves; and then spent two divisive years negotiating the Treaty that guaranteed our sovereignty in a double-dealing soap opera that would have made Machiavelli smile.  The First Yod Cluster period from 1776 to 1784 in which we cut ties with the mother country and attained sovereignty, was just the beginning.  Next, we had to expand and secure our borders.  This led to the concept of "Manifest Destiny."

The Concept of Manifest Destiny:  The Louisiana Purchase

The concept of "Manifest Destiny" was first mentioned in 1845 by journalist, John O'Sullivan, in the Democratic Review, a periodical published from 1837 to 1859.  He and others used it to support the annexation of Texas.  Once again, the American Yod Special Purpose is called forth in the idea that we were destined to control the entire North American continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.  Some Americans referred to this as a "God-given" right, which evokes the Yod, but it could also be construed as a prejudicial statement of self-entitlement.  Nevertheless, it is part of our history, like slavery, and should be included in "an honest accounting of America's history," as President Obama suggested in his moving June 26, 2015 eulogy to Reverend Clementa Pinckney in Charleston, South Carolina.

We made it through the First Yod Cluster Period and entered the Second Period after the Louisiana Purchase on April 30, 1803.  This event doubled the size of America, and has a Retrograde Libra Uranus Yod to Taurus Sun/Mercury and Pisces Pluto.  The Yod is a clarion call, a warning - what is the warning here?  I believe that it is twofold:  first, to France, in her error of surrendering any legal claim (Libra Uranus) to the lands that would eventually become America (Taurus Sun/Mercury); and second, to us regarding the moral blight of spreading slavery (Pisces Pluto).  The new U.S. territory would be organized into states, which would eventually have to be designated free or slave, and the potential number of slave states would grow.  Although we refused to be enslaved to a tyrannical monarch overseas, the sin of slavery was embedded in Colonial America, as many of the Founding Fathers (including Washington and Jefferson) were plantation owners who did not address the issue. Thus, slavery was perpetuated and grew like a cancer.  The Libra Uranus Yod cries for freedom, but this would take another revolution (the American Civil War, or the "Civil War") and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which eliminated slavery in all states, but it would take more than 100 years to cure the sin of slavery.

There is a 30-year incubation period after the Louisiana Purchase and before the Battle of the Alamo, the quiet before the storm of the Second American Revolution, the Civil War.  The same pattern of revolution present in the first set of American Yod Clusters would be repeated 85 years later when South Carolina passed the Ordinance of Secession, revolting from the Union on December 20, 1860 (five years from the end of the Second Yod Cluster).  The common theme in the Yod Clusters is revolution and social justice, especially concerning the eradication of slavery.  The First Cluster symbolizes the American Colonies' revolt against the shackles of monarchy; the Second Cluster involves the revolt against the scourge of slavery here at home; the Third Cluster involves the economic and social fallout from the Thirteenth Amendment and the challenge of implementing freedom and equality for the former slave population; the Fourth Yod Cluster represents the rise of technology and the coming challenge of climate change; and the Fifth Yod Cluster takes us back to issues of social justice and equality for all Americans.  We are still working on repairing the damage done by institutionalized slavery.  It is heartbreaking that over 100 years later, it seems like we are still fighting the Civil War.  The June 17, 2015 Charleston Massacre is a sad example.

Yod Clusters of Five:  The Second Yod Period:  The Second American Revolution

First Yod:  2/23/1836 - The Battle of the Alamo

Second Yod:  5/11/1846:  President Polk's Message to Congress on War With Mexico

Third Yod:  7/1/1863 - The Battle of Gettysburg

Fourth Yod:  4/9/1865 - Lee's Surrender at Appomattox

Fifth Yod:  4/15/1865 - Death of Abraham Lincoln

The Warm-Up to the Civil War:  The Mexican-American War

The Louisiana Purchase may have doubled the size of America, but Mexico still owned most of the Southwest territories, including what is now Texas, and America wanted to expand.  The next landmark American Yod occurred at the Battle of the Alamo, the event that led to Texan independence from Mexico in 1836.  Texan independence did not guarantee its entry into the United States at this time because it was a slave state and there was resistance to increasing their number.  Both Pluto (transformation) and Scorpio (death) occur repeatedly in the first two Yods of the Second American Yod Period.  The First Yod of the Second Yod Period occurred on February 23, 1836, the first day of the thirteen-day Battle of the Alamo -- there was a Retrograde Scorpio Saturn Yod to Venus/Pluto in Aries and Gemini Chiron, symbolizing the death (Saturn in Scorpio) of heroic warriors (Venus/Pluto in Aries), the tragic news (Gemini) of which would ultimately result in serious consequences (Chiron - suffering) - War (Venus/Pluto in Aries) with Mexico (Retrograde Saturn in Scorpio Fulcrum).  It took a decade, but the deaths of William Travis, Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett, would resonate when President Polk was calling for war with Mexico.

The Second Yod Event of the Second Period is a deadly double Yod event, which occurs on May 11, 1846, the date of President James Polk's Message on War With Mexico.  President Polk, who had a natal Aquarius Pluto Yod to the Moon in Cancer and Mars in Virgo, was committed to Manifest Destiny and it has been suggested that he instigated the Mexican/American War in his zeal to expand American territorial borders.  Of all the wars ever fought by the United States, and there are many, the shameful Mexican-American War is the only one that is not commemorated in our capital.  Polk’s Message to Congress has a hornet's nest of four difficult triple aspects, including a double Saturn/Neptune-Mars T-Square and a Double Yod.  President Polk's natal Pluto Yod connected with the double Yod that occurred on the day he gave his Message on War with Mexico (war was declared two days later on May 13).  The Message horoscope has a double Scorpio Moon/Virgo Chiron Yod that connects with the Aries Mercury/Pluto Legs in both Yods.  The treachery is augmented by the other two Legs of the double Yod being in the classic malefics, Mars (in Cancer) and Saturn/Neptune (in Aquarius).  The double Yod is a double warning:  (1) the acquisition of territory as a result of winning the war would increase the number of slave states and exacerbate the slavery dilemma, which would soon lead to (2) the American Civil War.  The Mexican/American War was the training ground for most of the generals who fought in the Civil War, including Generals Grant and Lee.

The American Civil War

The Third Yod Event of the Second Period occurs on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, 1863.  A comprehensive study of every battle of the Civil War would very likely lead to the discovery of many more Yods, but this would involve a great deal of time-consuming research and merits its own independent study.  In the meantime, the Battle of Gettysburg was the decisive battle of, and turning point in, the American Civil War, sealing Lee's failure to invade the North, and foreshadowing his eventual surrender at Appomattox.  The three-day battle was the biggest ever fought on the North American continent and the bloodiest battle of the entire war.  There were 50,000 casualties and both sides lost a significant portion of their armies, with Lee losing one-third and Meade one-quarter.  As stated in the April, 2014 issue of Horoscope magazine, in "The Battle of Gettysburg,":  "At 7:30 a.m. on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Moon was waning from Full by three degrees in Cancer/Capricorn.  There were also three T-Squares and a rising Mars Yod in Leo to Chiron in Pisces in the eighth house and the Moon in Capricorn in the fifth house.  The Yod symbolized the violence and suffering to come on this day."  It also ties in with the Yod in President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address delivered four-and-one-half months later on November 19, 1863.

On November 19, 1863, there was a Libra Venus/Saturn Yod to the Moon in Pisces and Pluto in Taurus.  In his brief and timeless speech, President Lincoln evokes America's Special Purpose as a "nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."  This resonates with the Libra Venus/Saturn Yod (serious commitment to, and love of, justice).  President Lincoln's speech was meant to commemorate the dead (Pluto in Taurus).  It was also an attempt to heal (Pluto) the Nation's wounds (Pisces Moon), but it would take more than a speech to accomplish this.  We are still striving for the "new birth of freedom" President Lincoln called for in the last sentence of the Gettysburg address.

The Fourth and Fifth Yods of the Second Yod Period occur five days apart and seal the fate of the Confederacy.  The Surrender at Appomattox was the beginning of the healing process between North and South.  General Grant treated the surrendered army with dignity and kindness, feeding them and allowing them to keep their firearms and horses.  The horoscope for this day has a Taurus Venus Yod (love, forgiveness) to Retrograde Saturn in Libra (karma, judgment, balance) and Jupiter in Sagittarius (justice, wisdom).  The warning is clear:  President Lincoln wanted to forgive the South and move on, but this would not be.

Five days after the surrender at Appomattox, the Fifth Yod event of the Second Period occurred with the assassination of President Lincoln.  On April 14, 1865, while at the theatre with his wife, Abraham Lincoln was shot from the back.  He died the next day.  There is a double Yod in his death horoscope.  The Venus Yod present at the Surrender at Appomattox is now crossed by a second Yod from the Moon in Sagittarius to Pluto in Taurus and Mars in Cancer.  This Yod, which occurs in Lincoln's first house, symbolizes the last soldier slain in the War:  the Commander-in-Chief.  Lincoln was double-crossed by the shooting and the poor medical attention he received.  The warning of the Moon Yod is that the War (Pluto/Mars Legs) would continue in subtle ways and Lincoln's Herculean victory with the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment would be a hollow one.  His dream for a peaceful reunification between North and South died with him.  Instead, we got Reconstruction, a dark and shameful period in American history.  President Lincoln led us to the Promised Land, but like Moses, was not allowed to enter.

Completion of the Transcontinental Railroad

President Lincoln united the country in more ways than one.  He directly ensured that the Transcontinental Railroad would be built when he signed the Pacific Railway Act on July 1, 1862.  The Act provided government support for building the railroad, which had been held up by arguments over whether the tracks would be laid in the North or South.  The Confederate rebellion settled that argument.  The 1500-mile Transcontinental Railroad was built in only three years.  Before its completion, there were limited ways to get from the East Coast of the United States to the West Coast.  Covered wagon took six months and was the most dangerous.  There were sea routes around Cape Horn (which took approximately six weeks) or through the Isthmus of Panama.  When the last spike of the Transcontinental Railroad was hammered into place on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Point, Utah, the country was finally united from coast-to-coast by rail, if not by philosophy.  On this transitional, key date in American history, there was a Sagittarius Saturn Yod to the Sun and Venus in Taurus and Uranus in Cancer.  Saturn in Sagittarius symbolizes the structure (Saturn) that would allow speedy long-distance travel (Sagittarius and the ninth house) over land (Taurus Sun/Venus).  It is a clarion call in our history, a foreshadowing of future long-distance air and space travel.  Our ingenious inventions and engineering feats, symbolized by Uranus in Cancer, are part of what makes us unique and part of our Special Purpose as the indispensible nation.  For the first time since the Paris Treaty signing and its ratifications, the American signature Cancer Uranus Yod appears here; it appears for the last time in the First Yod of the Third Yod Period.

Yod Clusters of Five:  The Third Yod Period:  The New Birth of Freedom

First Yod Event:  10/12/1870 – Death of Robert E. Lee

Second Yod Event:  1/8/18 – The Fourteen Points Speech

Third Yod Event:  4/15/1922 – Teapot Dome Scandal

Fourth Yod Event:  5/18/1954 – Brown v. Board of Education

Fifth Yod Event:  11/22/1963 – Death of John F. Kennedy

The First Yod Event of the Third Yod Period:  The Death of Robert E. Lee

The First Yod Event of the Third Yod Period is the death of Robert E. Lee on October 12, 1870.  The Sagittarius Saturn Yod (which falls on the Activation Point of Robert Lee's natal Gemini Moon Yod) present at the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad is still in effect to Uranus in Cancer, but the second Leg has shifted from the Sun/Venus in Taurus to the Moon in Taurus, the sign of its exaltation.  Venus rules both Taurus and Libra, and Jupiter rules Sagittatius – it is as though the two classic benefics are giving their blessing to the passing of the head of the Confederate Army.  Lee’s death is symbolic of the end of an era and should have given closure to the issue of slavery, but there were still storm clouds to come and there was no closure.  In fact, it sadly seems like we are still fighting the Civil War today.  Despite the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the surrender at Appomattox, it would take at least one hundred years of further struggle and litigation to enforce freedom for the former slaves.  There would be many setbacks along the way.

The Second Yod Event of the Third Yod Period:  The Fourteen Points Speech

One of the best attributes of our government is its resiliency.  It has survived many challenges, none so dire as the American Civil War, but many nonetheless.  Lincoln's "new birth of freedom" would be derailed by two early 20th Century American Presidents, Wilson and Harding.  President Woodrow Wilson and his successor, Warren G. Harding, would steer the ship of state away from social and domestic issues into a sea of international intrigue and corporate corruption.

The Second Yod Event of the Third Period involves the League of Nations.  President Woodrow Wilson was determined to turn America into a world leader and did his utmost to convince Congress to agree to join the League.  On the day of the Fourteen Points Speech on January 8, 1918, there was a Retrograde Capricorn Mercury Yod to Retrograde Gemini Jupiter and Retrograde Leo Saturn/Neptune.  Wilson's speech (Mercury) failed to persuade (Retrograde Gemini Jupiter Leg) the U.S. government to join the League of Nations (Leo Saturn/Neptune Leg - good intentions are clouded by unrealistic expectations of exercise of authority).  Congress did not want to undermine the sovereignty of the United States of America by ceding power to an international group.  Wilson died before he could do any final lobbying on behalf of the League, and the United States did not join.  The Capricorn Mercury Yod represents Wilson’s failure to communicate his vision to Congress, and the failed attempts of the League to rule.  Unlike the United Nations, the League had no military or sanction power and could only pass resolutions.  It was doomed to fail.

The Third Yod Event of the Third Yod Period:  The Teapot Dome Scandal

The Third Yod event of the Third Yod Period, the Teapot Dome Scandal  ("TDS"), involves the biggest scandal in American history before Watergate.  The Teapot Dome was named after a rock in a rich Wyoming oil reserve that was shaped like a teapot until the "spout" broke off.  The TDS became synonymous with what North Dakota Senator Gerald Nye called "the slimiest of slimy trails beaten by privilege." S.Rep. No. 70-1326, Part 2, at 3 (1928). [Summary of the Teapot Dome Scandal from the Brookings Institute, CUNY.]  In 1921, President Warren G. Harding transferred administration of leases for the U.S. Naval oil reserves in Wyoming to his poker buddy, Secretary of the Interior, Albert Bacon Fall.  The Navy had just switched from coal to petroleum, and the Wyoming reserves were meant to be held in trust in case of a national emergency.  Secretary Fall secretly sold drilling rights (without any bidding procedures) to two private oil companies in exchange for large, private "loans" to him that were never repaid.  When Mammoth Oil Company and Pan American Petroleum Corporation began drilling in the Naval reserves, the Governor of Wyoming became suspicious and called for an investigation.  This led to years of litigation that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.  In the case of Mammoth Oil v. United States, 275 US 13 (1927), the Supreme Court ultimately ruled in favor of the government and declared the secret leases to be fraudulent.  Secretary Fall was prosecuted but his boss, President Harding, died early in the investigation and escaped scrutiny by Congress.

There were three Yods on April 15, 1922, the day that Wyoming Senator John Kendrick introduced the resolution calling for an investigation into the lease deals  (S.Res. 277 (67th Congress) 1922):

Common to all three Yods is Jupiter, the planet that rules the law, in Libra, the sign that rules the legal system and the mechanics of legal procedure.  The chief enabler, President Harding, and his cronies flagrantly subverted the legal system to serve their greed.  If Harding was the enabler, his Secretary of the Interior, Albert Bacon Fall, was the mastermind.  It was he who convinced the President to transfer administration of the oil reserves from the Navy to his Department, ostensibly because he was "more experienced."  [Brookings Institute]  Fall was also a lawyer, which was his excuse for why he never consulted the Attorney General of the U.S. for an opinion as to the legality of the transfer.  To understand the tangle of Yods here, it is useful to look at the symbolism of each individual component.

Mighty Jupiter is beset by handicaps, the most severe of which is His involvement in all three Yods, but He is also Retrograde and heavily aspected.  Jupiter has two sextiles, one square, one quintile, two inconjuncts and two oppositions.  What little help might have come from the two sextiles is canceled by the Yods, squares and oppositions.  Furthermore, Jupiter is in an intercepted sign, as is the Jupiter Yod Activation Point.  The three Yod A.P.s and their house positions provide further insight into the complex tangle of Yods:

Greed led to the theft of government property by means of secret, illegal transfers and back-door deals that flouted the law.  The law finally prevailed, but it took six years, two special prosecutors, numerous congressional resolutions, civil and criminal trials and the death of a President.  This is the only triple Yod so far in this study.  Greed (Taurus Venus Yod) and corruption (Pisces Uranus Yod) would be defeated by the law (Retrograde Libra Jupiter Yod).  A pervasive cover-up, symbolized by the Pisces Uranus Yod to Leo Neptune and Libra Jupiter, would delay resolution of the investigation for six years.  President Harding escaped a direct confrontation with Congress over his role in the transfer of drilling rights, but his presidency bears the imprint of his actions, and he could not escape Fate:  He had a Natal Libra Venus Yod that lines up with the Jupiter Yod in the triple Yod.  (1) President Harding's Natal Libra Venus Yod Foot is conjunct the Libra Jupiter Yod Foot in the 4/15/1922 Triple Yod (the "Jupiter Yod").  (2) President Harding's Natal Retrograde Pisces Chiron Yod Leg is conjunct the Pisces Uranus Yod Leg of the Jupiter Yod.  (3) President Harding's Retrograde Taurus Pluto Yod Leg is conjunct the Venus Taurus Leg of the Jupiter Yod.  His poor judgment in relationships, as symbolized by his Natal Venus Yod, would bury his administration in scandal.

The Kendrick Resolution horoscope has the first and only triple Yod in this study.  The Finger of Fate was pointed at Warren G. Harding and his corrupt administration.  The Eye of God was on America.  Ours is perhaps the greatest democracy in history, but we are in constant danger of losing it to those who value money more than the principles on which America was founded.  The lesson here is that the American people must be vigilant in fighting greed, corruption and injustice.  The need for justice is one of the ideals behind the American Revolution in the first place.  In America, "LAW IS KING" (Thomas Paine).  Our legal system is arguably the best in the world and the best antidote to corruption.  The sword of justice is a mighty weapon with which to defend the principles in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

The tangle of Yods in the 4/15/1922 Kendrick Resolution horoscope was ultimately resolved by the highest Court in the United States, the U.S. Supreme Court.  Jupiter's involvement in all three Yods underscores the importance of law in the Teapot Dome Scandal, and in American history.  We rejected rule by king for rule by law, but in the Teapot Dome Scandal, the law was temporarily subverted by those who would act as kings.  The highest Court in the land was required to balance the scales of justice.  It was not the first time, nor would it be the last.

Brown v. Board of Education

347 U.S. 483 (1954)

The Fourth Yod Event of the Third Period involves a famous legal case styled, Brown v. Board of Education and returns the focus of American consciousness to the social problems caused by the aftermath of slavery.  Even the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution could not cure the evils of institutionalized slavery.  Many Southern States passed "Jim Crow" laws to effectively exclude former slaves from mainstream society.  Though the Thirteenth Amendment made the sale of human beings as chattel illegal, it did not prevent segregation.  It would take decades of litigation to address the effects of institutional segregation, much of it involving the U.S. Supreme Court.  In fact, Brown v. Board of Education overturned a previous U.S. Supreme Court decision, Plessy v. Ferguson, which ruled that segregation in public schools was OK as long as the separate, "colored" schools were "equal to" the "white" schools.

The American system of government is so ingenious that, even though the majority rules, there are opportunities for individual justice in our courts.  Our legal system is the envy of the world.  Laws are fluid, like society, and keep changing to accommodate humanity's need for order and justice.  Of course, the law is not perfect and can be subverted, but it works most of the time.  The American legal system is better than most others on the planet.  To quote Thomas Paine's, Common Sense:  ". . . in America, THE LAW IS KING."  (p. 31)  The U.S. Supreme Court has a recurring role in the Third and Fourth Yod Periods and its decisions have had a profound effect on society, for example Brown v. Board of Education, which was decided on May 18, 1954.

Brown v. Board of Education was a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of Oliver Brown and twelve other adult Plaintiffs (and their children) against the Defendants, who were the Board of Education of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas; Kenneth McFarland, Superintendent of Schools of Topeka, Kansas; and Frank Wilson, Principal of Sumner Elementary School.  The subject of the litigation was the institution of lower standards of education for so-called "colored" schools.  The winning legal argument was that the "colored" schools were not equal to the "white" schools, thus, the Plaintiffs were denied equal protection under the 1868 Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was meant to protect the freed slaves’ right to citizenship.  In its Opinion, the Supreme Court said that "segregation is a denial of the equal protection laws."  This decision changed the public education system and had dramatic social consequences.  On May 18, 1954, the day of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, there was a Gemini Mercury Yod (teachers) to Retrograde Saturn in Scorpio (redress of karma) and Mars in Capricorn (war on administrators, like superintendants and principals).  The Moon in Sagittarius, sign of education, is on the Yod Activation Point, a catalyst in the breakup (Mars/Saturn Yod Legs) of a communications (Mercury) impasse.  This Yod is a clarion call.  It would still take decades of litigation to further erode the forces of institutional segregation.

The Death of Camelot

The final events of the Third Yod Period involve an epidemic of death and assassination.  All three events occur under the influence of the Uranus/Pluto conjunction of October 9, 1965 at 18-degrees Virgo.  The period from 1963 to 1968 was full of social upheaval and tragedy, including the death of John F. Kennedy in 1963; the death of Malcolm X in 1965; the death of the Apollo 1 astronauts in January, 1967; the death of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968; and the death of Robert Kennedy on June 5, 1968.  The first event, the death of John F. Kennedy, was probably the most traumatic event for Americans since the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Regardless of whether it was a myth or not, Americans loved the illusion of Camelot given to us by the second youngest President ever elected (Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest President, having been elected at age 42).  Almost everyone remembers where they were on the day JFK died.  On the day he died, November 22, 1963, there was a deadly and very tight Virgo Uranus/Pluto Yod to the Moon in Aquarius (which is also conjunct Saturn) and Retrograde Jupiter in Aries.  Uranus conjunct Pluto (violent explosion) inconjunct Jupiter in the sign of war, Aries, and the Moon conjunct Saturn in the sign of revolution Uranus, was a violent wake-up call that change must occur, even if a martyr (Aquarius, Uranus) was required.

The death of JFK was followed by the deaths of Malcolm X and MLK.  The deaths of these two civil rights champions was compounded by the devastating loss of the Apollo 1 astronauts on January 27, 1967 at Cape Kennedy.  This senseless accident cost not only the lives of three exceptional Americans, Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee -- it nearly derailed America's mission to land a man on the Moon.  It was a clarion call that astronauts are not just “spam in a can,” to coin a phrase by Tom Wolfe, but our most precious resource in the age of space exploration.  There was a deadly double Yod on January 27, 1967, both of which involve the violent Uranus/Pluto conjunction that is present in all of these tragedies -- it is a Yod Leg in the Aquarius Venus Yod to Retrograde Cancer Jupiter and Retrograde Uranus/Pluto in Virgo; and it is on the AP of a Pisces Saturn/Chiron Yod to the Moon in Virgo and Mars in Libra.  The lofty goals of all of the fine men who died under the Uranus/Pluto conjunction were pre-empted by fate, but they all left their mark on American history.  Change did occur when President Johnson followed through on President Kennedy's proposed civil rights legislation, passing the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Right Act in1965.  Unfortunately, NASA did not learn the lesson of this event, and went on to lose two entire crews of America’s finest citizens in its pursuit of the glamorous, but impractical, Space Shuttle program.

The last casualty of this dark period in American history was Robert F. Kennedy, who died on June 5, 1968 after being shot at an appearance in Los Angeles, California.  The Uranus/Pluto Yod present in his older brother's death horoscope is now a Yod Leg in Robert's horoscope, with Saturn in Aries at the Fulcrum to a Retrograde Scorpio Neptune Leg.  The war against social injustice (Saturn in Aries) would temporarily end and disillusion (Scorpio Neptune) would creep in.  Camelot lived on for a while through Bobby, but with his death, the legend died and the Third Yod Period ends.

The Woodstock Musical Festival

The event that bridges the Third and Fourth Yod Periods in American History is the Woodstock Music Festival, which took place from August 15 - 18, 1969.  This celebration of love, peace and music brought hope back to the young people of America.  Although the festival was beset with delays and obstacles (traffic, medical, sanitation, and the challenge of providing food and water, all in keeping with the double Yod in effect), love conquered all.  The "Baby Boomer" generation is often referred to as the "Me" generation by those who were not there to experience it, but those who were there know it was the peace and love generation, especially love.  There was great joy and bright hope generated by the Woodstock experience, despite the serious nature of the double Yod presiding over the Festival.  Half of the young men attending held draft lottery numbers that would result in their facing death in the sweltering jungles of Vietnam, but they would be the last generation of young men to be involuntarily conscripted into military service thus far...

Ironically, the Woodstock celebration of peace, music and love was shadowed by two difficult Mars/Saturn Yods, each also sharing a leg with each other.  Vietnam was the shadow of death over the Festival and an entire generation of young men (and their mothers and wives).  Saturn in Taurus (the "Establishment") forms a Yod to Jupiter in Libra (which is conjunct incendiary Uranus - freedom and revolution) and Mars in Sagittarius (the will to be free).  The Festival helped ground (Saturn in Taurus) the young men (Mars in Sagittarius) who would be called upon to give their lives for a nebulous, ideological cause (Jupiter in Libra).  The Saturn Yod is crossed by a Sagittarius Mars Yod (demand for freedom) to Saturn in Taurus (the will of the "Establishment," i.e., what President Eisenhower called "the military/industrial complex") and Venus in Cancer (the power of love defeats the powers that desire war and destruction).  Love always defeats hate, which is the theme of the Fourth Yod Period.

IV.  Yod Clusters of Five:  The Fourth Yod Period:  The Computer Revolution
First Yod Event:  5/4/1970 – Kent State

Second & Third Yod Events:  4/1/1976 & 1/3/1977 – Formation & Incorporation of Apple

Fourth Yod Event:  5/18/1980 – Eruption of Mt. St. Helens

Fifth Yod Event:  3/13/1986 – Microsoft Goes Public

Kent State

The impact of the "counterculture," the Woodstock Nation, cannot be underestimated.  One person can make a difference, and a generation can change history.  "Hell, no, we won't go," was a clarion call to the "establishment" that its young people felt that a pointless war was not worth dying for.  Young men started refusing to obey the draft, just as young women started demanding reproductive rights and the right to control their own bodies.  The resistance to the draft created a violent rift between the government and the governed, which peaked with the First Yod event of the Fourth Yod Period, the murders at Kent State.  Before this travesty, the "silent majority," i.e., the parents of all those baby boomers, were ambiguous about the War and the conduct of their government and their offspring.  After the murder of four college students for merely exercising their constitutional right of free speech and assembly, parents of the Woodstock Generation woke up and started to agree with their children.  The Taurus Moon Yod in effect on May 4, 1970, the date of the shootings, represents the concerns of mothers everywhere over the fate of their offspring, the future generation, as represented by the two Yod Legs to Retrograde Libra Uranus (freedom denied) and Retrograde Scorpio Neptune (death for ideology).

The sign of war, Aries, is the sign on the Midheaven, but the Sun/Moon/Mercury and Saturn are all in the tenth house in Taurus, which should give them dominion, however, the Taurus Moon Yod (mothers) countermands the Taurus Sun/Saturn conjunction (the "establishment") and the mothers side with their children, the next generation, as represented by the outer planet Yod Legs.  Confidence in the government a/k/a the "establishment" continued to deteriorate with Watergate and the resignation of President Nixon, but our government is resilient.

The Second and Third Yod Events of the Fourth Yod Period:
Formation and Incorporation of Apple

The Woodstock generation grew up.  We survived the Viet Nam War and Watergate.  The last three decades of the Second Millennium were mostly peaceful, but there were many social changes, including the rise of disco and MTV, the cocaine epidemic and detente with the Soviet Union.  One of the biggest changes in society was the computer revolution.  The dominant machine in the business world, the IBM Selectric typewriter, would be replaced by the PC.  The personal computer was invented by a shy genius from San Jose, California, Steve Wozniak ("Woz"), who teamed up with an enthusiastic schoolmate with a talent for marketing, Steve Jobs.  Jobs came up with the name, "Apple," and the rest is history.  The computer revolution was a marvelous development for the human race, but it caused widespread chaos.  People had to learn about "hardware" and "software" and corporations had to transform their business models.

The chaos in the computer revolution is symbolized by the Yods in both the Apple formation and incorporation horoscopes.  Apple was formed on April 1, 1976 in Santa Clara, California under a Taurus Moon Yod to Retrograde Neptune in Sagittarius and Retrograde Pluto in Libra, the Second and Third Yod Events of the Fourth Yod Period.  The Moon Yod is born to nurture; and the Taurus Moon Yod Foot represents material benefit.  Even though the computer revolution caused a lot of pain, the benefits were bountiful (Taurus).  The PC gave the world access to vast storehouses of information (Neptune in Sagittarius).  Even esoteric knowledge formerly restricted to secret groups would become available, another result of the Sagittarius Neptune Yod Leg.  Eventually, computers would transform the basic fabric of society with social media and on-line relationship services, the influence of the Libra Pluto Yod Leg at work.

The second Apple Yod and Third Yod Event of the Fourth Yod Period, occurs on the date of its incorporation, January 3, 1977 in Cupertino, California.  This Yod is more serious and represents Apple's cutthroat business practices.  Woz would withdraw from Apple and Jobs would take over.  Jobs' cynical, hard-line attitude would result in Apple's financial success and a great personal fortune for him, Woz and Apple's shareholders after their IPO on December 20, 1980 (not surprisingly, there is no Yod in the IPO horoscope).  In Apple's incorporation horoscope, there is a Retrograde Capricorn Mercury Yod (Machiavellian business model) to the Moon in Gemini (emotional dishonesty) and Retrograde Saturn in Leo (megalomania, delusions of grandeur).  Steve Jobs was a charismatic Svengali with a hypnotic influence over people.  Regardless of what one might think of his personality or business practices, Jobs took Woz's amazing invention and, with brilliant marketing strategy, made it seem indispensible.  The computer revolution changed the world for the better.  Bill Gates would conquer the market a few years later with his liaison with IBM, but there are is a Yod Event in the interim, the eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

The Eruption of Mt. St. Helens

The Fourth Yod Event of the Fourth Yod Period is a geological one, the eruption of Mt. St. Helens on May 18, 1980 in the State of Washington, which occurred under a Jupiter/Saturn conjunction.  The event began with a 5.1 earthquake at 8:32 a.m.  By 8:50 a.m., the largest recorded landslide in U.S. history was in progress.  Mt. St. Helens was the most destructive volcanic eruption in U.S. history.  It destroyed over 200 homes, 185 miles of roadway and fifteen miles of railroad tracks.  On May 18, 1980, there was a Retrograde Sagittarius Neptune Yod to the Sun in Taurus and the Moon in Cancer.  Neptune rules earthquakes - an earthquake triggered the eruption; the Sun is in Taurus, the sign that rules the Earth; and the Moon is powerful in its own sign, Cancer.  The eruption (fire Neptune Yod Foot) decimated the land (the Sun Taurus Yod Leg) and temporarily dislocated most of the water in Spirit Lake (the Cancer Moon Yod Leg).  The eruption of Mt. St. Helens was a warning - the Pacific Northwest is in the Ring of Fire and long overdue for a major seismic event.  According to an article in the July 20, 2015 issue of The New Yorker, "The Really Big One," by Kathryn Schulz, the tectonic plate in the Pacific Northwest (the Juan de Fuca plate) is locked.  The last major earthquake is said to have occurred on January 26, 1700, a destructive 9.0 that created a monster tsunami.  According to the author, "we are now 350 years into a 243-year cycle."  This is a serious concern to be addressed on or before:  (a) the August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse which occurs from Salem, Oregon to Columbia, South Carolina and is likely to result in seismic events in the Pacific Northwest; and (b) the next Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in December 2020.

Microsoft Goes Public

The Fifth, and last Yod Event of the Fourth Yod Period has a double Yod, and takes us back to the computer revolution.  Apple went public on December 12, 1980, but failed to dominate the market.  After Microsoft teamed up with IBM, the PC wiped out Apple in the business world.  Gates proved to be even more ruthless than Jobs, and conquered the computer market with his "slash and burn" business model - he gave away his word processing software, MS Word, for free!  Of course, every Fortune 500 company took the freebie, and Gates was the King of the World.  He would then try to corner the market on operating systems, which got him into trouble with the U.S. Department of Justice.  Gates was faced with a deluge of litigation woes.  In the U.S. District for Washington State alone, there were 258 cases on the docket in which Microsoft was a defendant.  These are symbolized by the double Yod present in the horoscope for Microsoft's IPO on March 13, 1986 in New York City.

On March 13, 1986, there was a Retrograde Pluto Scorpio Yod to the Sun in Pisces and Chiron in Gemini.  The endless power struggles (Scorpio Pluto) over deceptive business practices (Pisces Sun) and deceitful communications (Gemini Chiron) would pit Gates and Microsoft against an entire generation (Gemini Chiron Yod to R Scorpio Pluto and Capricorn Neptune).  The Gemini Chiron Yod symbolizes the pain an entire generation went through as the business world transitioned (Pluto) from typewriters and paper files to computers and electronic data bases.  This was an administrative nightmare (Capricorn Neptune) as office managers and administrators coped with the conversion.  The Gemini Chiron Yod also symbolizes the aggravation caused by software bugs (remember the "Jason" tab?), and the physical pain of carpal tunnel syndrome caused by holding a mouse all day long every day (Gemini rules the hands).  The Pluto Yod symbolizes the way Gates forced his products on the business community with his free word processing software, Microsoft Word.  The two Yods also represent years of costly court battles and the uncertainty of litigation.  Gates's legendary gargantuan battles with the USDOJ nearly cost him his company.

Our legal system is the foundation of our society.  Part of our Special Purpose as a Yod Bearer nation is to set an example for the rest of the world with our legal system.  Our legal system is one of the biggest reasons we are exceptional.  ". . . in America, THE LAW IS KING.  For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be King."  Thomas Paine, Common Sense.  Our legal system may be one of the most remarkable in history, but it is not perfect and not every legal decision is a just or honorable one.  Indeed, some have been shameful, like the First Yod Event of the Fifth Yod Period, however, intervening as a bridge event between the Fourth and Fifth Yod Periods is Hurricane Andrew.

Hurricane Andrew

The transition event between the Fourth and Fifth Yod Periods is a natural disaster and a warning about climate change.  Andrew devastated South Florida when it struck on August 24, 1992 as a Category Five hurricane.  At the time, it was the most expensive natural disaster in American history, costing an estimated $30 billion.  A quarter-million people were left homeless and almost 100,000 businesses were damaged or destroyed.  More than one million people were without power for weeks or longer.  Andrew’s path of destruction was 25-miles wide and 60-miles long.

On the night Hurricane Andrew struck, there was a violent, interlocking double Yod involving Mercury, Mars and the three outer planets.  The first Yod from Gemini Mars to Uranus conjunct Neptune in Capricorn (both Retrograde) and Pluto in Scorpio represents the speed (Mars) and destructive power (Pluto) of the storm (Uranus conjunct Neptune), which went from a Category Two to Category Five overnight, after starting out slowly on August 14 as a tropical wave.  At the time, many residents of South Florida did not take the storm seriously because it meandered along for days before turning into a monster overnight (Scorpio Pluto).  The last-minute burst of power is symbolized by the Mercury/Chiron Yod Leg in the second Yod.  The second Yod, the storm Yod, is from Capricorn Uranus/Neptune to Leo Mercury/Chiron and Mars in Gemini.  This is the dominant Yod and represents the displacement of tens of thousands of people from their homes.  Many people were caught by surprise and lost everything they owned.  Indeed, any preparation would likely have been futile because of shoddy construction standards in South Florida at the time.  Poorly-built homes were obliterated in Andrew's 175-MPH winds.  Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn, sign of the manager and administrator, are symbolic of management failure to protect homeowners.  The Moon was in Cancer, sign of the home, that night, and is on the Yod A.P. of the Uranus/Neptune Yod.  Thousands of people lost their homes and approximately 100,000 people left South Florida for good, as a result of Andrew.  This had a severe impact on South Florida's growth potential (Mars inconjunct Uranus/Neptune) and affected the local economy for the next decade.

The Andrew double Yod was a warning.  Superstorms are occurring more often.  There were four Category Five hurricanes in 2005, Emily, Katrina, Rita and Wilma.  Katrina destroyed New Orleans; Wilma was the strongest storm ever recorded.  Category Four and Five hurricanes have increased 80% in the past 30 years.  Andrew was just the beginning.

Bush v. Gore

531 U.S. 98 (2000)

The First Yod Event of the Fifth Yod Period involves the highest Court in the United States and the final authority on legal matters, the United States Supreme Court.  Supreme Court decisions have a profound effect on society.  We, the people, trust the nine justices on the Supreme Court to do the right thing and I would like to believe that they usually do, however, in its history, our highest Court has made some questionable decisions - after all, judges are human beings who can make mistakes.  Alan Dershowitz lists some of the big ones on p. 173 of his book about the Bush v. Gore case, Supreme Injustice.  To quote Mr. Dershowitz:

Heading the list, of course, is Dred Scott v. Sanford, which essentially declared African-Americans to be property, without rights.  Included on this list of infamy is Plessy v. Ferguson, which announced the principle of "separate but equal."  Korematsu v. United States, which permitted Americans to be put in detention camps during World War II entirely because of their race, also deserves a place of dishonor, as does the decision in 1872's Bradwell v. State declaring women unsuited to the practice of law.

One of the most questionable Supreme Court decisions in recent history occurred on December 12, 2000.  On that day, in an unprecedented legal maneuver, five U.S. Supreme Court justices stopped a legitimate vote recount in Florida and effectively declared George W. Bush the winner of the 2000 presidential election.  The Bush v. Gore decision was a shock to the public, but it was an outrage to the legal community.  In his pamphlet about the decision, The Betrayal of America, renowned prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi says on page 47:  "For many of my colleagues, this was like the day that President Kennedy was assassinated."  He goes on to say on page 94:  "The Court's action was so wrong and so blatantly political that on January 13, 2001, over 500 law professors from around the country took out a full-page ad in the New York Times denouncing the stay order."  It is interesting to note that the stay order halting the recount was not signed by any of the majority five Justices (Rehnquist, O’Connor, Kennedy, Thomas and Scalia).

The legal argument for this ruling is an embarrassing example of pretzel logic.  The U.S. Supreme Court evoked the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause, which is meant to guarantee equal protection under the law to all American citizens, and twisted it to say that some votes in Florida were "valued" more than others and were, therefore, “unequal” and invalid.  The Opinion states on page four:  "Having once granted the right to vote on equal terms, the State may not, by later arbitrary and disparate treatment, value one person's vote over that of another."  Using the "value" criterion and the “valuation” argument, the Supreme Court threw out 12,300 votes from two Florida counties, conveniently ignoring the fact that their arbitrary decision stripped those votes of any value at all!  Furthermore, to put George W. Bush in office, the U.S. Supreme Court under William H. Rehnquist argued that "standardless" manual recounts violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.  An examination of the ten-page Per Curiam decision is a painful exercise, but the "hanging chad" argument is close to being the best example of the worst argument.  Here is the "hanging chad" quote from page five of the fateful 12/12/2000 decision:

As seems to have been acknowledged at oral argument, the standards for accepting or rejecting contested ballots might vary not only from county to county but indeed within a single county from one recount team to another.  . . . Palm Beach County, for example, began the process with a 1990 guideline which precluded counting completely attached chads, switched to a rule that considered a vote to be legal if any light could be seen through a chad, changed back to the 1990 rule, and then abandoned any pretense of a per se rule, only to have a court order that the county consider dimpled chads legal.  This is not a process with sufficient guarantees of equal treatment [emphasis added].

Under this argument, NONE of the votes in Florida should have been counted.  I am a long-time resident of the State of Florida, and it is a big state with 67 counties and 20 Judicial Districts.  They vary from county to county in their governmental practices, from court procedures to the mechanism of voting.  Under the Rehnquist logic, none of the votes of any citizen of Florida should be counted because we differ in practices and procedures from county to county and are, therefore, not "equal."  The shameful theft of the 2000 presidential election is a reminder of the Teapot Dome Scandal.  It rivals Albert Bacon Fall's theft and private sale of public land in its audacity, only it is worse because of its abuse of the Equal Protection Clause.  For a factually detailed and clearly written discussion of this historical legal case, please read Mr. Bugliosi's excellent pamphlet, The Betrayal of America.  If you have the stomach to read it, the verbatim decision can be found at www.law.cornell.edu and is also probably buried somewhere in the archives of the Supreme Court website.

The horoscope for December 12, 2000 has a double Yod.  There is a Retrograde Taurus Saturn Yod to Libra Mars and the Sun/Chiron in Sagittarius; and a Cancer Moon/North Node Yod to Sagittarius Mercury and Aquarius Uranus.  The double Yod involves all the celestial points except for Jupiter, which is retrograde in Gemini in the tenth house.  Jupiter and Libra rule the law and the legal profession respectively -- Jupiter represents the need for justice that is the basis of law and Libra represents the courts and the legal system.  In an interesting occurrence of synchronicity, Jupiter is under attack like He was in the Teapot Dome Scandal Kendrick Resolution horoscope.  Here, Jupiter is also retrograde and in an air sign, Gemini, the sign of two faces.  The five Justices who decided the election, Rehnquist, O'Connor, Scalia, Thomas and Kennedy, acted with two faces -- they knew they had no legal standing to steal an election, so they made it up as they went along, then did an about-face attempt to cover their legal wrongdoing by saying the ruling could not be used in any other case or legal argument.  In their own words:  "Our consideration is limited to the present circumstances for the problem of equal protection in election processes generally presents many complexities."  For the highest court in the land to make such an inane remark is beyond belief, especially because they surely must have been aware that Florida, one of the largest states in the USA with twenty judicial circuits and 67 counties, has some of the most complex election procedures in the country.

Jupiter stands for the chicanery at work in this legal tar baby, but there are other astrological indications of dishonesty in the Bush v. Gore horoscope.  Saturn in Taurus (the establishment) is three degrees from the Midheaven and inconjunct Mars in Libra (attack by the Court) as well as the Sun in Sagittarius (ideology).  Jupiter (law) rules Sagittarius, but is defeated by a concentration of Sagittarius points (Sun, Mercury, Chiron and Pluto, representing the tangle of lies in this legal soap opera) and Mars in Libra (the Court's attack on the voters and Al Gore).  The Uranus Yod Leg of the Moon Yod is powerful in its own sign and shares houses with an Aquarius Venus/Neptune conjunction (ideological deception and camoflauge).  The Moon Yod overpowers the Saturn Yod because it corrals most of the planets in the horoscope, and the Sun.  It is also conjunct the North Node, which means the South Node is on the Yod Activation Point.  The South Node is in Capricorn, which is ruled by Saturn - we are back to the Saturn Yod, which symbolized betrayal by authority, in this case, the highest legal authority of the land.

The Root Yod

In the course researching this article, it was surprising to me that there were no Yods in any of the four horoscopes for each of the 9/11 plane strikes.  I also expected to find a Yod on April 12, 1861 at 4:30 a.m. when the first shot of the Civil War was fired at Fort Sumter, as well as for the Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle explosions.  As the study broadened and the pattern of Yods appeared, it became apparent that certain Root Yod events have a ripple effect that lead to other catastrophic events, which do not necessarily have Yods.  For example:

1.  9/11:  The Root Event of 9/11 is the appointment of George W. Bush by the U.S. Supreme Court on December 12, 2000.  This led to a cascade of disasters, including 9/11, the Iraq War and the response to Katrina, for example.  It has also been argued that the Islamic States arose out of the Iraq War and its destabilization of the country.

2.  The Challenger and Columbia Space Shuttle Explosions:  The reason there is no Yod in the horoscopes for these two explosions is because the Root Event is the Apollo 1 tragedy on January 27, 1967, which was a cry to institute and enforce crew safety protocols.  Ignoring the cry led to more tragedy.

3.  The First Shot Fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina:  The Root Event of the entire Civil War is the Mexican American War, which laid the ground for the Civil War by creating an influx of slave states.  This brought the conflict between abolitionists and slave owners to the boiling point, which led to a cascade of seceding states and an eventual declaration of war between fellow Americans.

There are probably more Root Yods to be discovered, but these are the ones I have found so far.

Hurricane Katrina

One of the ripple effects of the Supreme Court's appointment of George W. Bush was the tragic loss of life in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Second Yod Event of the Fifth Yod Period.  Andrew was catastrophic in terms of property damage, but killed less than 50 people.  Katrina killed almost 2000, most of them African-Americans.  Human beings were herded like cattle into the Superdome where they were trapped for days without food, water, or sanitation facilities.  Some died right on television in their wheelchairs.  The high death toll was most likely caused by the lackadaisical response of the federal government which resulted in a two-day delay in the Department of Homeland Security’s and the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response to the crisis.

On the day Katrina formed in the Bahamas, August 23, 2005, there was a treacherous Retrograde Uranus Yod in water sign, Pisces, to Mercury in fire sign, Leo, and Venus in air sign, Libra.  Normally, Mercury sextile Venus would be a harmonious aspect, but with two quincunxes to Uranus attached to it, the aspect becomes incendiary (air feeds fire) and Mercury is at his most mischievous.  Interestingly, Mercury was also in Leo during Andrew, at fourteen-degrees Leo.  The Yod faded by the time Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29, but the Sun had moved to the position of the Yod Activation Point in the August 23 Yod, and was two degrees away from opposition to Uranus, which was moving backwards towards exact opposition with the Sun in Virgo.  The Sun/Uranus opposition would adversely affect the health (Virgo) of the survivors, including pets, thousands of whom would become ill from the foul flood waters (Pisces), if they did not perish from starvation.  The vibrant culture that once existed in New Orleans is mostly gone.  Though partially recovered, New Orleans will never be the same.

The Charleston Massacre

The effects of the Bush v. Gore decision are still reverberating today, but we have survived and even triumphed as a country.  One of America's proudest moments was the election, then re-election of the first African-American President in U.S. history, Barack H. Obama.  This triumph goes a long way towards healing the wounds of segregation and slavery, but the battle continues.  The Third Yod Event of the Fifth Yod Period, the Charleston Massacre, occurred on the evening of June 17, 2015.  At that time, Dylann Roof, a 21-year old high school dropout white supremacist, entered the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and, at about 9:00 p.m., opened fire on a peaceful prayer meeting.  He killed nine people in a church just because of the color of their skin.  This hate crime wounded the entire nation and called attention to the fact that the Confederate flag was still flying in the state where the murders occurred and where the Civil War started.

It is said that Dylann Roof suggested he wanted to start a race war.  Instead, he brought forth the spirit of love when over and over again, the surviving family members of the departed who appeared at the televised preliminary hearing forgave the killer.  This is not what Dylann Roof expected and as I watched the proceedings, he appeared to be in tears at one point.  Love defeated hate in this appalling tragedy and it is symbolized by the Leo Venus Yod (love - Venus is also widely conjunct Jupiter) to retrograde Pisces Neptune (misplaced ideology fueled by drug abuse) and retrograde Capricorn Pluto (cold-blooded, well-planned, deliberately carried out execution).  The Moon in Cancer opposing Pluto in Capricorn and the Sun conjunct Mars enabled the shocking violence of that night.  Roof's heinous act was pre-meditated and compounded the horror, but love defeated hate in the aftermath of the slaughter, first in the forgiveness expressed by the surviving relatives, then in President Obama's beautiful eulogy to Reverend Clementa Pinckney.  It went further with two liberating U.S. Supreme Court decisions in two days, then the official removal of the Confederate flag from South Carolina State property.  Venus in Leo and eight-degrees from Jupiter represents the power of love at work here.  Love is the most powerful force in the universe, and the actions of this mad child (Leo rules children) had the opposite effect of his intent.  Instead, an outpouring of love, compassion and heightened awareness followed his crime.  President Obama inspired the Nation at the funeral and delivered a transcendent eulogy.  His wise words summarize our progress:

None of us can or should expect a transformation in race relations overnight. Every time something like this happens, somebody says we have to have a conversation about race. We talk a lot about race. There's no shortcut. And we don't need more talk.  None of us should believe that a handful of gun safety measures will prevent every tragedy. It will not. People of goodwill will continue to debate the merits of various policies, as our democracy requires - this is a big, raucous place, America is. And there are good people on both sides of these debates. Whatever solutions we find will necessarily be incomplete.  But it would be a betrayal of everything Reverend Pinckney stood for, I believe, if we allowed ourselves to slip into a comfortable silence again.

Love would continue to triumph over hate when the U.S. Supreme Court issued two important decisions on two days in June, 2015 that further shift attention back to society.  As love defeated hate in the Charleston massacre, it also defeated hate in the "gay marriage" decision, Obergefell v. Hodges, one of two events that represent the Fourth Yod Event of the Fifth Yod Period.  Both are Supreme Court decisions that put social justice ahead of political ideology.

Texas v. Inclusive Communities Project; 576 U.S. ___ (2015) and

Obergefell v. Hodges; 576 U.S. ___ (2015)

The first case, Texas v. Inclusive Communities Project, involved use of tax credits handed out by local government agencies to developers as a reward for building low-income housing.  Instead of spreading the tax credits around to all their projects, including the suburban ones, developers chose to concentrate them in the inner cities, effectually perpetuating ghettos for generations.  On June 25, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that this caused a "disparate impact" in violation of the Fair Housing Act, which was adopted shortly after the death of Martin Luther King, Jr., to redress denial of housing opportunities on the basis of racial discrimination.  The case was remanded (i.e., returned to the lower court), so the litigation will continue, but the Supreme Court's decision helped chip away at institutional segregation.

The second case in this combination Yod event, Obergefell v. Hodges, was decided the following day, June 26, and also addresses the issue of discrimination.  Interestingly, one of the background cases that led up to Obergefell was Loving v. Virginia, a 1967 case forbidding interracial marriage in the State of Virginia.  Like Brown v. Board of Education, Obergefell v. Hodges was a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of fourteen same sex couples and two other  petitioners whose same sex partners were deceased.  The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples are entitled to the same legal protection under the equal protection principle of the Fourteenth Amendment as opposite-sex couples and stated that "the Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State."  This is a fascinating opinion and worth reading (it is available on the U.S. Supreme Court website).  Parts of it are moving, like the quote below.

No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law.  The Constitution grants them that right.

This is our law and it is something to be proud of.  The opinion in the Obergefell case is beautiful and poetic and a tribute to the power of love.  One would expect to see Venus (love) and Jupiter (marriage) in the horoscopes on June 25 and 26, 2015 and, indeed, they are conjunct in Leo and a Yod Leg.  The horoscopes for both of these legal cases have a Retrograde Capricorn Pluto Yod to Venus conjunct Jupiter in Leo and Mercury in Gemini, the sign of the Twins (and two faces) - here, the two faces are the same sex couple facing each other before a magistrate to take their marriage vows (Venus conjunct Jupiter).  Capricorn represents institutions, in this case, the State.  The passage of Pluto through Capricorn, the sign of the goat and the administrator (and through its ruler, Saturn, the "establishment") has brought about upheaval in many institutions, starting with banks and the 2008 recession (Pluto entered Capricorn at the end of November, 2008).  The conservative (Capricorn Pluto) outcry (Gemini Mercury) over Obergefell (Leo Venus/Jupiter), beginning with the lengthy vituperations of the four dissenting Justices, was so violent that one wonders if this case will turn out to be the new Roe v. Wade and lead to decades of litigation.

The Confederate Flag Finally Comes Down

The Fifth Yod Event of the Fifth Yod Period is a triumph of the Civil Rights movement.  On July 9, 2015 at 4:18 p.m., conservative Governor Nikki Haley signed a bill ordering removal of the Confederate flag from all State property in South Carolina.  This is symbolic of justice and love prevailing over injustice and hate.  South Carolina, the first State to secede from the Union, the first State to fire a shot in the Civil War, and the State where the Charleston Massacre occurred just weeks earlier, finally capitulated to justice in giving up the Confederate flag.  This is a joyous (Venus/Jupiter in Leo on the Midheaven), but sober (Saturn) victory.  The horoscope for this event has a Retrograde Scorpio Saturn Yod to the Moon at zero-degrees Taurus and Mercury at one-degree Cancer.  Pluto is opposite Mars and the Sun - after more than two centuries, the Sun may finally be setting on the greatest shame in American history, the sin of slavery.  The Lord of Karma in Scorpio is collecting on the debt.  The Sun, Mercury and Mars in Cancer are disposited by the Moon, which is a Yod Leg.  This hearkens back to the Cancer Uranus in all three Paris Treaty Charts.  It is a warning, a clarion call of too little, too late.  President Obama said it perfectly in his Eulogy to Reverend Clementa Pinckney:

For too long, we've been blind to the way past injustices continue to shape the present. Perhaps we see that now.  Perhaps this tragedy causes us to ask some tough questions about how we can permit so many of our children to languish in poverty, or attend dilapidated schools, or grow up without prospects for a job or for a career.  Perhaps it causes us to examine what we're doing to cause some of our children to hate.

Can Lincoln's "new birth of freedom" finally begin?  As long as we think in terms of "progress," in race relations, we have not reached the finish line.  Only when we stop thinking of each other as "types," rather than as unique, individual human beings, will we be near the finish line.

Conclusion

America is a Yod-Bearer Nation with a Special Purpose of setting an example of what a democratic nation can achieve for its people and the rest of the world.  In our brief history, we have transformed the world with our art, philosophy and scientific achievements.  Whether we are loved or hated, there is no denying that America has an exceptional place in history.  From the first Puritan settlers, Americans have felt the obligation to set a good example.  This belief evolved into the concept of American Exceptionalism, the belief that America has a moral obligation to set a good example.  It does not mean that we hold ourselves above others.  We are far from perfect.  America is a land of contradictions.  The Declaration of Independence states that, "all men are created equal," but this noble idea was contradicted by the reality of slavery.  Our first President and many of the Founding Fathers were plantation owners with many slaves.  America stands for "freedom and justice for all," but we have the largest prison population on the planet.  We profess freedom of religion, but religious fanatics deny this right to others, even killing those who disagree with them.  Yes, we are a "big, raucous nation," as President Obama put it, but we have done more to improve the human condition than any other nation in history.  We are always there to help when there is trouble in the world.  We are the indispensible nation and should always try to set a good example and "do the right thing."  It is part of our Yod Bearer Special Purpose and our destiny.
